Chemistry

'Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of practical and investigational skills. Chemical principles underpin both the physical environment in which we liveand all biological systems. Chemistry is often a prerequisite for many other courses in higher education, such as medicine, biological science and environmental science.' (IBO Subject Brief)

May 2021 Examination Changes

The IBO has announced significant changes to the assessment methods for the May 2021 Examination period. Almost all subjects have seen the weighting of certain papers amended, the length of exams reduced, and many have seen entier assessment components removed.

Read more about Chemistry

Chemistry is often called the central science, as in a way it forms the bridge between biology and physics, and is deeply connected to nearly every major branch of science. Fundamentally it is the study of matter, its properties and behaviour, and how it changes and reacts. Chemistry is deeply important to fields like medicine, biological sciences, environmental studies, and also less commonly thought of fields like geology and food science. Studying chemistry will give any student a wonderful and powerful insight into the world around them, and teach them principles that they can apply in nearly any field they choose to go into.

Advice from our tutors

A new IB chemistry student should make sure they keep practicing the fundamentals of chemical calculations, usually encountered first in the unit of stoichiometry, throughout their DP years. These questions come up all the time, and it can be hard to focus on and excel at the later topics if you are still confused about the basics!

Assessment

The Diploma Programme chemistry course includes essential chemical principles, and also the selection of options that allow students to dive more deeply into specific aspects of chemistry. The IB chemistry course incorporates both theory and experiments, with students developing practical investigation techniques alongside their theoretical abilities. The IB has also placed a degree of importance on the development of interpersonal skills and digital technology skills - both of which are essential to conducting successful science in the modern day, and skills that are transferable into nearly all other pursuits.Students are assessed through the use of quizzes and tests. We also provide traditional activities such as essay writing to prepare them for the exams.

Assessment will be both formative and summative and in accordance with IB criteria.

IB chemistry graduates are highly sought after, as the comprehensive program prepares students exceptionally well for the rigours of a university level chemistry course. Chemistry at Higher Level is an obvious requirement for directly related courses like chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, and medicine, but can also be hugely useful and applicable to any students looking to pursue geosciences, and various biology related studies. The high-level investigative and organisational skills that students learn in IB chemistry, can also be applied to data-driven analytical subjects like economics, business, and computer science, while a passion for chemical synthesis and design can be easily utilised in the fashion and food industries.
